London: Cable group NTL, which has offices in London and Luton, has announced plans to cut its 17,000-strong UK workforce by 4,000.

The losses will come from sales, marketing and management departments. The consumer service side will remain unaffected.

The company has already reduced UK numbers from 21,800 so far this year. It originally planned to have 17,000 staff by the end of 2001, reducing the number further by the end of 2002.

A spokeswoman told the press that NTL is "accelerating and deepening" the initial plan as part of a cost-cutting programme.
