THE News Shopper has joined forces with the council to make Bromley borough one of the greenest places in Britain.
We are launching a year-long campaign to encourage our hundreds of thousands of loyal readers to go green.
From today (Wednesday) readers can collect 3,000 FREE energy efficient light bulbs, get environmentally friendly advice and see examples of energy efficient products.
All you have to do is visit the council car park next to the News Shopper's offices in Queensway, Petts Wood.
Council chiefs are keen to spread the environmentally-friendly message and encourage residents to cut down on the use of fossil fuels by using renewable energy. Each resident is entitled to two bulbs and Bromley Council's environmental development manager Alastair Baillie says people should make the effort.
He said: "It is important we get as many people along as possible, as every bulb which Bromley residents use saves carbon dioxide emissions.
"The bulbs are worth between £5 and £9 each, last 10 times as long as normal bulbs and will save an average of £20 each year on electricity bills.
"By installing simple energy-saving measures, residents could reduce their fuel bills by up to £200 every year."
As well as the News Shopper/council give-away, residents are to be advised how to get Government grants of up to £2,000 to make their homes more energy efficient. The grants are aimed at owner-occupiers and people who rent from private landlords.
Since June 2000 over 540 residents in Bromley have benefited from these grants.
