A fire ripped through and gutted a Sutton storage room before spreading to six flats above, leaving one seriously damaged and causing £13,000 worth of damage, on Friday evening.

Fire crews were on the scene just before 6.30pm and spent two hours battling the blaze, which police believe was the work of arsonists.

The 32-year-old woman living in the worst-affected flat was fortunately out at the time of the blaze in Oakwood Court in Benhill Wood Road. The other residents were roused by their smoke alarms and evacuated the block, though their flats were only lightly smoke damaged.

Police believe people were sleeping rough in the storage room before the blaze. If you have any information call DC Hepworth on 020 8649 0731.
