A long-standing tradition is set to continue in Bexleyheath, despite the retirement of its most-famous participant.
Sir Edward Heath, MP for Bexley, started the annual Christmas Concert at Crook Log Sports Centre 19 years ago. He has organised the event, chosen the music and conducted the high-profile concert every year since then.
Following his retirement from his seat in the House of Commons this year, Sir Edward has also decided to step down from running the concert. Bexley Council has now invited the Bexley Centre of Music & Dance, which has always played a big part in the programme, to take on the running of the popular event.
Michael Purton, chief executive of the music centre, has organised this year's concert. He said: "I'm not trying to be Sir Edward. We're striking out in a slightly different direction but we feel we are continuing a great tradition."
Talented young people the centre works with as well as high-profile musicians will perform.
The concert will take place on December 17 at 7.45pm and will feature the Regimental Band of the Welsh Guards under their director of music Major Philip Shannon MBE. There will be a collection for the Mayor's Charity.
They will perform with the Bexley Youth Orchestra and bands and choirs from the Bexley Centre for Music & Dance.
Mr Purton said: "We did invite Sir Edward to come this year but unfortunately he can't be with us.
"He sent us a very nice letter of apology."
Tickets are selling well so book now. This should make an unforgettable start to the Christmas season with carols for the audience and festive items with the Guards.
Tickets can be obtained from the Bexley Centre for Music & Dance (020 8302 1456), from Crook Log Sports Centre (020 8304 53 86) or on the door but don't miss out!
