Having sold East Barnet Urban District Council Town Hall to a restaurateur, Barnet Council now plans to sell Friern Barnet District Town Hall to a hotelier (Could historic town hall be turned into a hotel?', Times Group, November 29).
Once the estate agents, who would seem to run our local authority, have succeeded in this new plan to sell off yet another of the fixed assets of the people of Barnet, presumably they will fix their sights on Barnet Urban District Town Hall, opposite Barnet Church in Wood Street. The abolition of the two-tiered system of local government in favour of a unitary authority system is an aberration. Power has been taken away from residents, and placed in the hands of property developers, accountants and solicitors.
Surely it is time to stand up to the Goliath-like unitary authority system, and demand the restoration of a district council for Friern Barnet. Why, there's a town hall ready and waiting for occupation by Friern Barnet district council.
