AT this time of year with Christmas fast approaching it is even more important that we take all precautions necessary to protect our property. o

Our homes and vehicles are at risk from thieves who are more concerned with taking than giving.

A few simple precautions could prevent your Christmas from being ruined. Never leave presents on display in your car, even for a few minutes. If you have to leave valuables in your car always lock them in the boot out of sight.

It is also advisable to keep all receipts in a different place to your purchases. This will make it difficult for the thief to return goods to the purchase point in order to obtain a cash refund.

If you are away for the Christmas period consider using an electric timer to switch on a lamp or two to give the impression that somebody is in.

Let your neighbours know that you will be away so that they can keep an eye on things for you. With the shopping centres being especially busy in the run-up to Christmas it is easier for pick-pockets to mingle with shoppers and remove wallets, purses without the victim realising.

Keep bags close to you and if possible put cash and credit cards in an inside pocket of your coat or jacket. We are also continuing to see cases of car and house keys being removed from hall tables using poles through letterboxes.

It may be hard to break a habit but by placing keys in a drawer or in another inaccessible place will prevent this method being used in your home and keep your presents under your own tree instead of somebody else's!

Everyone at Loughton police station would like to send readers our very best wishes for a safe and happy Christmas.
