Scunthorpe United 3 Brentford 2 (Dec 8)
FA Cup Round Two
Brentford's hope of a money-spinning cup run came to an abrupt end when they were sent crashing out of the FA Cup by Scunthorpe United in Round Two.
The Bees fielded an unchanged 11 and it was Lloyd Owusu who had the first chance 11 minutes in, but his volley went well wide. But it was Scunthorpe who took the lead after 15 minutes, Martin Carruthers heading home a Torpey flick on from a corner.
The 27th minute saw further trouble for The Bees.
Darren Powell fouled Carruthers in the area and referee Fraser Stretton pointed to the spot.
Peter Beagrie blasted the ball towards the bottom left hand corner but Oli Gottskalksson made a superb save, diving low to push the ball away. From the resultant corner, Jackson hit the bar, with the Bees defence in disarray.
On 33 minutes, a good shot from Burgess was saved by Evans from 20 yards out.
Scunthorpe struck again with 10 minutes remaining before the break, a glancing header at the near post by Calvo-Garcia, from a Beagrie corner. The Bees struck back quickly after 40 minutes. Michael Dobson picked up an Ivan Ingimarsson header to fire home a superb volley from the right hand side of the area.
After the break Brentford found more urgency and on 52 minutes, Evans' in-swinging cross from a short corner found Ben Burgess and his header beat Evans to level the scores.
After 69 minutes, Gottskalksson flapped at a Beagrie long-range effort, but did enough to recover the ball. And four minutes later another uncharacteristic mistake from the keeper allowed Scunthorpe to re-take the lead. He again flapped at a cross and lost the ball allowing Martin Carruthers to stab home from six yards.
Bees: Gottskalksson, Dobson, Powell, Ingimarsson, Gibbs, Sidwell (O'Connor), Evans, Mahon, Hunt (Williams), Burgess, Owusu
