Hospital matrons are to be reintroduced to the wards of Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow.
The new matrons, all experienced senior nurses, have been appointed to four areas of the hospital by Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust.
They will wear distinctive burgundy and black uniforms and be responsible for providing leadership to other staff as well as ensuring patients and their families receive the best possible services.
Their duties will include making sure patients get high quality care and elderly patients are treated with respect, ensuring the food is good, improving the wards, resolving problems, preventing and controlling infection and representing the other nurses.
The matrons will work in breast services, paediatrics, elderly services and cardiology.
The trust's director of nursing, Mona Walker, said: "We're delighted to be introducing our four new matrons. They are a tangible example of our efforts to continue to drive forward the NHS Plan and its modernisation agenda."
