LOCAL Conservatives have estimated that nearly £15m is lost in revenue each year through unoccupied garages.
With Haringey Council having debts bigger than those of some third world countries, is this money that Haringey Council can really afford to lose?
With so many unoccupied garages you would think that residents who want a garage would get one quickly, but this could not be further from the truth.
I applied for a garage three years ago.
After two years of waiting I finally obtained one earlier this year.
Haringey Council lost more than £800 in revenue while it tried to find me one of the 65 per cent of garages that are unoccupied!
Is this the type of service that the people deserve from Haringey Council?
The sad brutal truth is that, like, most services in Haringey, many of the garages are in bad decay and have had little or no maintenance.
Many garages are illegally occupied and Haringey Council has no overall knowledge of which garages are being legitimately used.
If revenue was to be recovered by the leasing of garages at affordable rates then it would go a long way to help solve the parking problems experienced by many residents in Haringey.
