Carols and Capers is a seasonal treat from Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band when they come to the Ashcroft Theatre on Wednesday, December 17, at 8pm.

The show features Christmas music from England and America played on medieval instruments.

Renowned folk singer Maddy will include old favourites like The Holly and The Ivy and I Saw Three Ships, and secular carols such as The Boar's Head also dance tunes like Old Joe Clark.

The Carnival Band and Maddy Prior are a great combination since they teamed up on a casual basis for a Yuletide Radio 2 special broadcast.

The band themselves, and in particular their leader Andy Watts, are accomplished musicians who have a lust to restore energy into the dry, rigid, renaissance material they tackle.

They succeed by mixing modern and ethnic instrumentation with a cavalier attitude, a quality they share with Maddy Prior.

Their initial meeting spawned A Tapestry of Carols and clearly established their Christmas party type tours.

Carols and Capers was released, after which 1995 saw the release of Hang Up Sorrow and Care. A live recording from the 1997 tour was released as Carols at Christmas in 1998.

Tickets for Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band are £11.50 and £13.50 available from the Fairfield box office on 020 8688 9291.
