A charity targeting abuse of older people is to embark on a new phase in bringing the problem to the attention of the public.

Action on Elder Abuse, which has offices on London Road in Norbury, claims elder abuse is a very under-exposed problem long overdue for nationwide recognition and ripe for the appointment of its first media officer.

Katerina Clarke brings with her skills in journalism as well as hands on experience dealing with older people from her role as vice chairman at Mayday Hospital's radio station.

The charity believes abuse of the elderly to be an issue requiring specialist attention, because abusive experiences are so unlike any other conventional issues affecting older people.

Chief executive Ginny Jenkins said: "The organisation has made enormous inroads in elder abuse issues over the years via its helpline, as well as providing training and support for practitioners.

"We have been influential, too, on legislation with our in depth knowledge and the information we are able to provide.

"Having a media officer on board to raise our profile will greatly enhance our effectiveness."

Katerina is looking forward to leading the media campaign, believing the charity to be at an important stage in its growth.

She said: "Elder abuse is an issue which has long been overdue for nationwide recognition and it will be my job to bring that awareness to the public".

The organisation, which was set up nine years ago, has the only national freephone helpline which deals solely and specifically with abuse of older people.

This can include psychological, physical, and financial abuse. Call 080 8808 8141 for confidential advice and support.
