YOUNGSTERS across Redbridge have been getting into the festive spirit with a host of parties and shows.

With school work winding down for the year, they have put their hearts and souls into making sure this is a Christmas to remember.

Among those enjoying the festive period were youngsters who attended a special Christmas party on Saturday.

The event, organised by the Maybank Community Association, was held at Mill Grove Hall in Crescent Road, South Woodford.

As well as enjoying the festive food, children also played party games including pass the parcel and musical chairs.

Association treasurer Frank Collins said: "About 48 children turned up and they all had a really good time. After the games, and tea, Father Christmas turned up and gave them presents."

Other youngsters in the borough put their efforts into performing.

Students at Bancroft's Preparatory School, all members of the school's newly-founded chapel choir, staged Tom and Hannah's Carol at the school in Woodford Green on Monday.

It told the story of the Kacaj family who live on the Albanian-Yugoslavian border. The family, who include five children, have neither land, water, income support nor work but rely on local goodwill.

One of the children, 12-year-old Elizabeth, has been severely disabled since she fell from a cart as a small child. She is totally dependent as the state is no longer able to pay disability allowance.

The carol was written by a grandfather who brought Balkan orphans to England and wrote a song especially for children who have suffered or died through conflict. It aims to show how, for love to triumph, people must try to understand and forgive those who find it difficult to love.

Funds raised will be used to give support to Albanian families such as helping with water well construction or providing revolving loans.

Wells Playgroup joined in the Christmas celebrations with its own Christmas production on Monday.

The playgroup, which meets in All Saints Church in Woodford Green, staged a series of Christmas songs such as I Am A Little Snowman and Twinkle Twinkle for delighted parents.

The youngsters, aged two to five, all wore costumes designed by their parents. Visitors were also able to enjoy a raffle, mince pies, and a Guess The Weight Of The Cake competition.

Wells Playgroup chairwoman Penny Hodges said: "It's the Christmas concert we hold every year, and about 40 of our children took part this year.

"We would like to thank the staff for all their help today and throughout the whole year."
