THEYDON Bois' villager of the year Sally McMeekin was chosen to light the village's Christmas tree at the new village hall on Friday.
About 100 people attended the event which included Christmas carols, with councillor Robert Glozier as Father Christmas arriving on an illuminated sleigh. A collection was made for the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
Theydon Bois Primary School pupils sang their favourite Christmas songs, with Rev David Penegar reading a closing prayer. Visitors enjoyed mince pies and mulled wine.
Parish council chairman Wilfred Shales said: "We were overwhelmed by the turnout and the general response to the event. Everyone had a brilliant time and enjoyed themselves."
Mrs McMeekin was presented with a rosebowl in July for her "tireless contribution" to the Theydon Bois Day Centre for the Elderly over the last 16 years.
