A doctor jumped from a first floor window to his death as he tried to escape a further beating from a teenager who launched an unprovoked attack on him as he slept, a court heard.

Dr Owen Daniel Smith fell 30ft from the bathroom window of the house in Sheen Road, Richmond, on November 25 last year.

The 31-year-old suffered serious head and internal injuries and died five days later.

Dean Chesters, 20, of Sheen Road, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter when he appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, but admitted a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The court heard that Dr Smith, who worked as a registrar at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Devon, had travelled to Richmond to visit his family.

He had gone to Edwards, in Richmond, during a night out with his brother and met Chesters mother, Jacqui, and her friend, Gillian Bonnick.

Following a few drinks, the doctor left the bar with Miss Bonnick, after being given the keys to Mrs Chesters home in Sheen Road.

The court heard that the couple had sex before falling asleep in Mrs Chesters bed.

Miss Bonnick told the court she was woken by shouting and saw Chesters repeatedly punching the doctor and screaming at him to get out of his mothers bed.

Miss Bonnick said she ran upstairs to get help from Chesters brother and as she returned she heard the bathroom window open and saw Dr Smith climb on to the ledge and disappear.

She said he had been petrified after the assault and believed he had jumped on to the fire escape at the back of the house to safety. The doctors body was discovered in the back garden shortly afterwards.

The trial continues.
