Train operators serving passengers in Barnet were hit with hefty fines last week, for failing to run trains on time in the last year.
WAGN, serving Potters Bar, Hadley Wood, New Barnet, Oakleigh Park and New Southgate, was landed with a £12,800,000 bill for the past year, compared to just £1,408,000 for the year up to October 2000. Just under 79 per cent of WAGN trains, run by the National Express Group, ran on time, 12 per cent worse than the previous year.
Thameslink, serving Elstree and Borehamwood, Mill Hill Broadway, Hendon and Cricklewood, was fined almost £5,800,000 by the Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) for its yearly performance up to October 2001, up from only £876,000 for the previous year.
Contracts drawn up between the train companies and Railtrack meant that Railtrack, currently in administration, has to pay a significant proportion of the fines.
The SRA is to collect £136million in fines from UK train operators, which will be re-invested into the rail industry.
