Banstead Athletic crashed out of their second cup competition in the space of three days on Tuesday night.

They lost 1-0 to Barton Rovers in their Ryman League Cup preliminary round replay, having been dispatched from the FA Vase by Dereham Town on Saturday.

Despite being favourites, Banstead were unimpressive on the day and were fairly beaten by the Jewson League side, who scored two second-half goals to claim victory.

This followed an uneventful first half, in which Banstead played the best football, but created few chances.

Bobby George looked lively and Banstead were nearly gifted a goal late in the first half when Matthew Gorham mis-directed a header towards his own goal and his keeper was called upon to spare his blushes.

Dereham's only real chance in the first half came on 31 minutes, when Ollie Christie cut inside and curled a right-footed effort towards goal. But Glyn Shimell dived to palm the shot away.

The second half proved more eventful and Dereham took the lead through Graham Barrett who curled his shot over Shimell from 20 yards. From then on Dereham bombarded the Banstead goal.

They extended their lead in the 72nd minute when Tommy Taylor burst past a flatfooted back line to place the ball under Shimell and into the far corner of the net.

After that, Banstead mustered only a couple of half chances in the last 15 minutes.
