Aveley 1 Wingate & Finchley 3
Ryman League Division Three
Wingate and Finchley produced an excellent team performance to end the unbeaten home record of second-placed Aveley with a richly-deserved win on Saturday.
James Thompson followed up his two goals in the 4-1 home drubbing over Leighton Town in midweek with another brace.
Thompson struck after only three minutes.
He managed to get in front of an Aveley defender and meet Richard Baum's cross with a header past the keeper.
Aveley applied strong pressure, but Wingate keeper James Goodman coped well, spreading himself to deny Matt Harold, who was clear.
But Aveley equalised midway through the first half.
Ex-Spurs, West Ham and Charlton player Mark Robson provided a good cross and Tommy Lee nipped in to score with a low drive to tie the score at 1-1.
Wingate started the second half strongly and Clive Wilson restored their lead with a 57th-minute penalty awarded for handball.
Sound defensive play prevented an equaliser by Aveley.
Thompson made sure of the three points for Wingate with a cracking strike in the 78th minute.
He stormed down the middle of the pitch and lifted the ball beautifully over the keeper's outstretched arm.
WINGATE & FINCHLEY: Goodman, Neilsen, Wilson, Donn, Pope, Olayinka, Butterfield, Thompson (Williams 88), Fitzpatrick, Morris, Baum. Subs not used: Dineen, Wood.
