Brentford 3 Wrexham 0

(December 15)

BRENTFORD put last week's FA Cup defeat well and truly behind them with a comprehensive win over Wrexham at Griffin Park to move within a point of league leaders Stoke.

Stephen Hunt got the Bees off to a perfect start with the first goal on five minutes after Lloyd Owusu's ball from the left found the Irishman, who tucked the ball home to register his third goal of the season.

The rest of the half was quite a scrappy affair but Bees keeper Oli Gottskalksson was called into action twice, making two fine saves on 25 minutes from Shaun Holmes and then Andrew Morrell, blocking from point blank range.

Five minutes after the break, Brentford doubled their lead.

Ben Burgess' left foot volley from another Owusu pass beat Rogers in the Wrexham goal.

On 62 minutes, Brentford effectively killed the game.

Ivar Ingimarsson met Paul Evans pin-point cross to smash home from 18 yards for his fourth goal of the season.

With 22 minutes left on the clock, Wrexham's Lee Trundle was dismissed for elbowing Michael Dobson, completing the Welshman's misery.

The funniest moment of the match was when Brentford were making their first substitution.

Stephen Hunt milked the applause from the Griffin Park faithful as he thought he was being replaced, only for Ben Burgess to be called off the field instead.

On realising this, Hunt quickly resumed his normal position on the pitch, rather red-faced.

Brentford's giant Icelandic striker Ivar Ingimarsson was full of praise for fellow countryman and Bees goalkeeper Gottskalksson.

He said: "Our goalkeeper was great and made some vital saves at the start."

"I am very pleased for him because he got a lot of stick after those three defeats and he showed today that he is a very good goalkeeper indeed."

Brentford can reflect on another three points and a good performance hopefully the start of a good run of results over Christmas.
