Retaining Copthall Stadium's Green Belt status emerged as a high priority after a consultation exercise into its future by the Neighbourhood Initiative Foundation (NIF).

The charity gathered views from more than 800 people before presenting a suitable plan for the future of the site to Barnet Council.

"I think the council seem really pleased and the residents seem to be on board with it," said Mike Daligan, community development consultant on behalf of NIF. "People in the main wanted the residential character of the area and Green Belt maintained and most of them wanted improvements for Copthall which is what we expected."

Priorities identified include an improvement in public transport, providing wildlife and conservation areas and making the site's facilities free for surrounding schools. There were fears over increases in traffic and a lack of support for the idea of Copthall being managed by a private company.

Mill Hill councillor Wayne Casey, said: "This was a borough-wide consultation and it goes to show that people in Barnet are generally very supportive of keeping Copthall's Green Belt."

A report on the survey will now be considered at Barnet Council's cabinet meeting in early January.
