BOGUS prize draw letters sent by overseas tricksters could increase in the run-up to Christmas, trading standards officers warn.
Complaints have been received about mail shots sent from abroad promising thousands of pounds in prize money.
Officers say the letters look convincing but are almost certainly a scam targeted at people who need extra cash for the festive season.
To claim their prize, the reader is instructed to send an administration fee usually between £5 and £30. Trading standards believe it is very unlikely any prize money will be sent.
The senders are based in countries like Canada, the Netherlands or Australia. UK authorities are unable to prevent the letters from arriving because the sender is based outside and is outside English law.
