THE task of improving standards in primary schools will be more than a million time easier thanks to new government grants.

Greenwich and Lewisham boroughs are set to recieve about £1,036,370 and £913,266 respectively, out of a total London-wide grant of £24,708,386 to spend on raising standards throughout primary schools.

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has issued the grants to London primary schools to spend on literacy and numeracy provision.

The money will help introduce a series of new measures such as booster classes for 10 and 11-year-olds, continued training for teachers and additional training for literacy and mathematics co-ordinators.
