TOP United Kingdom distance runner Nick Francis gave a depleted Cambridge Harriers team something to cheer about by winning the latest Kent Cross Country League race in fine style.

After finishing second in the previous two league races, this comfortable win by Francis against a good quality field showed he is continuing to improve well this season.

His very fine performance he clocked 30 minutes 25 seconds round a very muddy course was very welcomed by the Sutcliffe Park based team which, due to injuries and illness, had a number of its key athletes absent.

Francis was backed up by track specialist Andy Knight who was 14th in 34:01, and veteran runners Steve Birkin in 46th (36:51) and Jerry Carnell, 53rd in 37:04.

Despite the lack of strength in depth, Cambridge Harriers still managed to finish seventh and fifth in the four-man team and 12-man team races respectively.

Other Harriers finishers and times: 90th Mark Cross 40:19; 94th Graham Maynard 40:30: 98th Simon Giles 40:39; 99th Paul Kent 40:42; 114th Piers Brunning 42:02; 118th Dave Fisher 42:24; 120th Paul Cullern 42:41; 124th Jim Collis 43:01; 127th Russell Williams 43:16; 131st Peter Hadley 43:56; 143rd Mark Newell 46:13; 148th Paul Lewis 46:42; 152nd Les Pullen 48:45; and 156th Keith Miles 50:32.
