A new centre has been opened to help people learn about computers.

The Computer Gym mobile learning centre is fully equipped with the latest software and hardware to help people in pockets of the borough where there is no permanent IT facility

Already 150 adults in Penge, Anerley, the Crays, Mottingham and Biggin Hill have signed up to the project most of whom have never used a computer before.

The target for the new scheme is to take on 500 new learners in a variety of IT-based subjects, such as e-mail and using the internet.

The project is supported by several government groups as well as Bromley and Orpington colleges.

The total funding for the project comes to £400,000 over two years.

Opening the computer gym, Mayor of Bromley Councillor John Holbrook, said: "I am delighted to launch this exciting new facility.

"It is part of a new strategy to support the development of local communities where a need has been identified.

"Residents will have free access to discover their own information technology needs in a friendly, supportive environment."
