A MAN has paid £300 to spend Christmas and New Year underground.
Colin Wood will be in the Kelvedon Hatch Nuclear Bunker for two weeks and will emerge on January 2, 2002.
Owner of the Essex former Cold War shelter Michael Parrish confirmed that Mr Wood will stay in the bunker for the entire festive period.
Mr Wood won his stay underground through bidding in an internet auction.
He claimed to hate Christmas and said he always bickers with family.
The bunker is 30 metres underground and protected against atomic and biological attack by 10ft-thick reinforced concrete walls, and blast doors made from tank metal.
It was designed at the height of the Cold War to house military and civilian personnel to run the country in the event of a nuclear attack.
