AN EU directive on the disposal of domestic refrigerators has been adopted by the Government. The consequences of this ill-conceived measure are rapidly becoming obvious on the streets of Redbridge.
Shops can no longer take old refrigerators, because it must now be stripped of material which may contain CFC gases. Unfortunalely the UK has no infrastructure to carry out this process. The Government hashad to allocate £6m to help councils pay for temporary storage until stripping plants are set up.
I have asked Redbridge Council officers for an urgent report on this matter to be brought to the next area three committee meeting.
It would be unfortunate if a measure intended to reduce atmospheric polluction resulted in an increase in dumping and a potential threat to children from refrigerators where youngsters could play with them.
