Over the last few months our property, Hendon Methodist Church, has been vandalised on a number of occasions.
A week before Christmas, I erected a Christmas Crib outside the church, within our walled garden. Three days later I came back to fix a timer switch to the light, only to find that the Holy Crib had been violated, many figures stolen and some left broken on the ground. I feel that this will, regrettably, be the last time that a Crib will be on display outside the church.
On Saturday, December 22, we found that our church had been vandalised inside, our Christmas tree wrecked and our main silver cross on the altar taken down and bent in half. Until now I have not contacted the police on any of these points as I know that they are overstretched and are unable to do very much in these cases.
As we no longer have a Hendon Police Station in Brent Street to look after us, I feel that these mindless acts can only become worse.
In the multi-racial, interdenominational society in which we live, it would appear that we are becoming overrun by outside forces to which the desecration of a church means nothing. It is a sad reflection on society in general.
