Train services operated by West Anglia Great Northern are being replaced with a special timetable.
Dominic Booth, managing director of WAGN, said the company's efforts were being directed at supporting those most immediately affected and in assisting as much as possible with the investigation now under way.
He added: "This is obviously a terrible tragedy and all our thoughts are currently with the passengers, relatives and loved ones during this tragic time."
Experts from WAGN, Railtrack, and Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate branch of the Health and Safety Executive have launched a full investigation to establish the cause of the incident.
Meanwhile Railtrack need access to Potters Bar station car park in order to position heavy lifting equipment to remove the damaged carriage. A large number of cars are still in the car park and Railtrack have asked that they be removed, where possible, straight away so that they can start the removal process.
Details of the WAGN special timetable can be obtained by calling National Rail Enquiries (08457 484950).
Anyone wishing to make enquiries about friends or relatives who may have been on the train are asked to call the emergency helpline number: 0845 9441 551.
