A ONCE-derelict playground has been transformed into a stunning community garden by residents of the Essex Close Estate in Walthamstow.
The garden was officially opened at the weekend by the estate's oldest resident Olive Kaye, 85, and the youngest, two-year-old triplets Kiara, Jared and Karice Samuel-Adams.
Over a hundred residents turned out to the official opening, with many of them donating plants which helped turn the former wasteland into a little oasis of greenery.
The Essex Arms pub suported the event by donating a bouncy castle and barbacue, and ex-Mayor and councillor Bob Wheatley arrived in time for the celebrations.
Bill Shearer, Chairman of the estate's tenants and residents association said: "The garden area used to be a derelict and run-down playground which, with the help of our tenants and residents association, individual residents, and working in conjunction with the council, has been transformed into a peaceful oasis here in the heart of Walthamstow."
The association also received £1,000 from the council's Green Charter fund, which helps residents develop green spaces.
Pictured at the event are: Bob Wheatley with Mrs Kaye and the estate's youngest residents, the Samuel-Adams triplets with mum Claudette Samuel, and Karena Samuel.
