YOUNG thespians will benefit when Dartford's youth theatre is given its independence from the council.
For the first time in its 16-year history, an independent management committee will be set up to run the theatre, based at the Mick Jagger Centre, and Dartford Council has pledged a one-off payment of £15,000 to help kick-start the project.
A report to Dartford's cabinet claims the theatre will be able to take on more students and offer scholarships, as a result of the extra funding opportunities.
It adds: "It is recommended in order for the Orchard Youth Theatre to expand and develop, it should be formally constituted and independently managed."
Founded in 1986, the group was given space at Orchard Theatre, Home Gardens, before moving to the centre in Shepherd's Lane.
To be known as Dartford Youth Theatre from now on, it is hoped youngsters from disadvantaged families will be able to win scholarships to study drama something the theatre has not been able to offer while under council control.
Students currently pay up to £55 a term for two hours' tuition a week.
