MAYOR Fazlur Rahman planted a tree in Waltham Forest Register Office's garden on Monday in readiness for an open day next weekend.

Cllr Rahman was helping the register office prepare for the special occassion, and horticulturist Teresa Farnham, who looks after the gardens, has been working hard to make them look their best in time for the event.

The tree, commonly known as a strawberry tree, is thought to be a relic from before the Ice Age.

The gardens are to be opened to support the National Garden Scheme, which raises money for charity by asking people or organisations to open their gardens to the public for a small charge.

The mayor said: "The garden has been developed and improved over the past five or six years to become a public garden for all to see and enjoy. It is definitely a sight to behold and gaze upon and well worth a visit. Those involved deserve to be credited."

The garden will be open on Sunday, July 21, from 2pm to 5pm. Admission is £1 for adults and 25p for children.
