Old Southendians165-9 dec

(Essex League Division One)

A FINE all round performance from Harlow moved them up to second place in the Shepherd Neame Essex League Division One table as they beat Old Southendians on Saturday.

Harlow Skipper Jed Hill won an important toss and chose to bowl first on the helpful-looking track and his decision was rewarded straight away as Paul Mayhew picked up two early wickets, including danger-man James Blackmore who was bowled for 11.

When Turner was dismissed by Mark Green in the 27th over with the score on 66 he had batted 81 minutes and faced 80 deliveries for his eight, an indication of the dominance of the Harlow bowlers. Bunce was the next to go, also off the bowling of Green, for 34.

The fifth wicket fell soon afterwards, leaving Southend on a precarious 96-5 off 37 overs, yet yhe Southend tail was able to hang on and the home side chose to bat for 65 overs, before eventually declaring on 165-9.

Harlow got off to a flying start and never looked in any danger of not winning on what was now a much friendlier pitch for batsmen.

Pallav Patel and Nilesh Odedra put on 46 for the first wicket, Odedra the first to go for 15.

Replaced by his brother, Niraj, he added a further 38 with Patel before he went for 19. Patel passed 50 for the second week in a row and hit nine boundaries before being bowled by Bugeja for 63, with the score on 105/3.

Mark Green and Simon Baulcomb saw Harlow home from this point with a undefeated fourth-wicket partnership of 62 from just nine overs, with both players hitting a brace of fours and a six each.
