ON SUNDAY, Glendene Cycling Club's star rider Richard Whitehorn won his second road race of the year in the 83 mile Shaftesbury C.C. Road Race on the Wendens Ambo/Elmdon circuit on the Essex and Cambridgeshire border.
In a race in which the Glendene team of Tony Woodcock, Andy Elderfield, Tony Couchman and Brett Travers along with Whitehorn covered all of the important breaks in the race, the depleted bunch was still together on the final long climb from Ickleton to Elmdon with 10 miles of the race to go. Whitehorn attacked three times and with his third effort escaped with John Wood (Finsbury Park CC).
Hesitation in the bunch allowed a commanding lead to be established. Whitehorn was in the ideal spot, behind his fellow escapee, when Wood started the sprint with 150m to go. He was able to come round Wood and finish 10 metres clear. Tony Woodcock and Brett Travers followed in 30 seconds later.
On Saturday Colin Mannakee was in action at Eastway cycle circuit in the Whitewebbs Summer Circuit Races and finished second overall in the fourth category race.
