FURTHER to your article on waste tyres (Guardian last week), it is to be hoped that the Government has learnt from the debacle caused by its own mishandling of the new rules for dealing with fridge disposal in an environmentally friendly way and has started planning how it intends to support the implementation of the IFU rules that prohibit the dangerous practice of dumping tyres in landfill sites.
Tyres were banned from landfill sites as they can "float" to the surface and become a fire hazard. Fires have raged out of control in some landfill sites for days.
Thus, the dangers and possibilities of tyre dumps are real short-term problems that must be overcome. Solving this problem in the longer term, however, will mean making the case for producing fewer waste tyres in the first place and finding alternative means of disposing of those that we do produce.
