THE council's cabinet decision to close South Access Road, Walthamstow, is supported and welcomed by the residents of Markhouse Road and surrounding areas and parents of children who attend Barn Croft School.
They have to face the major hazard of crossing this dangerous road when taking their children to and from school each day. The closure decision is long overdue and has been in the pipeline for some considerable time now.
We hope and trust that the council is not contemplating any form of U-turn regarding its decision to close this 'rat run' which has blighted the lived of many local people for years.
As secretary of the local St James Park Residents Association, I can assure the council that we would strongly challenge any attempt to reverse the decision to close South Access Road.
The safety of young schoolchildren in this area and a vast reduction in the environmental pollution caused by such a heavy volume of traffic is far more important than the possibility that a handful of business park employees may be late for work. What a shame! I've never heard of such a pathetic excuse to campaign against a quite logical council decision or to consider a public inquiry.
JAMES HEPTING,
Secretary St James' Park
Residents Association
