LOCAL students were awarded certificates in recognition of their progress in maths and English recently.
All 98 pupils attend the South Woodford Kumon Study Centre, High Road, after school hours and were rewarded for demonstrating an exceptional ability in the two subjects for their age.
Councillor Maureen Hoskins presented the certificates at the Woodford County High School in Woodford Green.
Iren Rodden, who runs the centre, explained: "Kumon aims to show children that learning Maths and English can be fun. Our programmes in both the subjects are highly structured and suitable for all ages and abilities.
"All my students start with an individual assessment and begin at a level that suits their current ability. Starting at a comfortable level enables children to gain 100 per cent and this boosts their confidence enormously."
She added: "Students received special certificates for a bronze, silver or gold level of achievement. The aim is obviously to motivate children who have worked hard to reach their targets."
A total of 84 pupils excelled in maths while the remaining 14 were rewarded for their achievements in English, enabling them to get a place on the Kumon Advanced Student Roll which lists names of all Kumon students who have shown ability beyond their age.
