FRESH from taking their GCSE exams two students from George Mitchell secondary school in Leyton got a taste of university life at Docklands Summer School.

Haleema Shariff, 16, and Reena Jadav, 16, took a four-day trip to the University of East London's Docklands campus last week, with another 68 students from East London and East Anglia.

Over the four days students took part in creative courses textile design, printing, media production and photography.

Reema said: "Being here has definitely made me think more about university, and I'd like to study law.

"The projects have been enjoyable and it has been good to meet so many students from different places."

The course finished with the 70 students receiving certificates from UEL vice-chancellor Mike Thorne.

The scheme was organised by the University of East London as part of an initiative to get more young people to consider higher education as an option for their futures.

Project co-ordinator Sheila Weeden said: "The aim of the summer school is to build confidence and give students a taste of university life.

"It provides more information to help these young people make their own decisions in life."
