A TOWERING inferno on the 12th floor of a block of flats in Brentford, where more than 20 people had to be rescued by firemen, is believed to have been an arson attack.
Tenants of Wickstead House in Green Dragon Lane, who feared being burnt alive while trapped by the blaze on the night of June 27th, are convinced that the incident was no accident.
Three residents told the Times this week of how they have been living in fear' of the events of last week for months, after receiving numerous threats that Wickstead House would be targeted.
Fearful of being identified, all spoke of how the threats had persisted throughout the past year, with one adding that similar, but less severe, incidents had occurred in the past.
According to police, the fire started some time between 6.30pm and 8.50pm, though firemen arrived on the scene at 9.18pm.
Using special breathing equipment, they had to break down the door of the enflamed flat with a sledgehammer, to combat the flames.
Nine people were rescued from the 12th floor, with more than 20 being evacuated in total.
One lady from the 13th floor was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
Further mystery continues to shroud the circumstances surrounding the spread of the fire.
A concierge service operates on all of the Tower blocks in Green Dragon Lane during the day, and Cornish house provides security during the night.
To enter any of the buildings, claimed a council spokesman, you must live there.''
While reticent to reveal what led them to suspect arson, a spokesman for the fire brigade revealed only: There was something there that made us think it was deliberate.''
He added that the flat did not have a fire alarm.
Whilst a man has been arrested in connection with the incident, he has since been released on police bail and police chiefs are now urging Times readers, and anyone with any further information about the blaze, to come forward.
