A BISHOP'S Stortford youngster is on his way to America to represent his country at roller hockey.

William Fattore, 16, of Knebworth Court, will join the ten-strong under-16s British squad to compete in the North American Roller Hockey Championships in Minnesota later this month.

He said: "I've been playing roller hockey since I was ten. This tournament is a real test for the team as it's quite a new sport in the UK and is extremely popular in the USA."

The British squad is made up of players from across the UK. The under-16s team, called Time to Shine, is competing in the competition by invitation.

William, who received £100 from the Saffron Walden Herts and Essex Building Society towards his travel costs, said: "I go to Derby every week to train and I'm hoping to be in good form for the tournament."

William plays for three teams, Team Vimto, the Tunbridge Wells Cruisers and Time to Shine.

Roller hockey is similar to ice hockey with the significant difference being that no physical contact is allowed.

Williams plays in offence as a striker and hopes ultimately to be able to go professional.
