A LONG-RUNNING appeal which provided vital equipment to Lewisham Hospital has stopped major fundraising due to lack of volunteers.

The Lewi 3C's appeal, Conquering Colon Cancer, was set up 14 years ago to raise cash for a CT scanner.

A farewell event was attended by volunteers and hospital staff, who were presented with a second colonoscope, used to examine the bowel.

Over the years, the appeal bought wheelchairs for stroke victims, four defibrillators and financially supported an amputee group for one year.

Appeal director Peggy Fitzsimmons said: "I just want to thank everybody who supported me and the appeal. It shows the commitment of people in Lewisham to better health services."

The charity still has an account for people to make donations and collection boxes will still be used in shops at boot fairs. For more information, call 020 8690 6772.
