A FORMER community hall in Teddington looks set to be sold to developers by the council to be turned into family homes.

Craig Hall, in Clarence Road, is an impressive classical style building built in 1859. It has been empty for the last few years, but before that was used as a community hall.

Richmond upon Thames Council put it up for sale because 'the use was found to be becoming uneconomic'.

On Thursday potential buyers Glenhorn Limited had their speculative application to refurbish the hall to make two family homes, recommended for approval by council planners.

A planning officer explained that although the application did not conform to the council's Unitary Development Plan guidelines for community centres and public halls, it would prevent the building from falling into disrepair.

At the time of going to press a final decision on the application had not yet been made.
