CHELSFIELD EVENING WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
Our talk at our meeting on June 18, given by Mr Curry, often called "The Weather Man". His talk was interesting giving many dates regarding unusual weather, as followson Sep-tember 5, 1958 we had a month's rain in one and a half hours.
In 1952 we had a great fog and the East Coast was flooded. On Coronation day in 1953 snow fell. In 1938 the Northern Lights were seen over London and the South East. In stoke on Trent in 1996, clouds were seen known as Mother of Pearl, made up of tiny droplets and hovering approximately 12 miles up. In 1999 the temperature fell owing to an eclipse of the sun on August 11, Orpington suffered damage to property and wildlife in the Great Storm of October 1987, but luckily no lives were lost.
The mildest winter's day recorded was January 25, 1990, but even on that day violent storms were experienced.
We heard about hurricanes and tornadoes, sand storms and dust clouds. Mixed in with all these dates and information were a few ditties and poems - very amusing.
to sum up our evening, I suppose you could say the talk was sunshine and showers with some very bright intervals. Enjoyed by all.
