WILMINGTON AXTANE CLUB
Preparations for the Queen's Jubilee Celebration Lunch commenced early in St Michael's Par-ish Hall, Wilmington by the arrival in the morning of Vic Jarrett, Les Dixson and Ernie Wag-horn and it was not long before decorations appropriate to a golden occasion were in hand. Members, wives, friends and guests arriving for the celebration lunch were delighted with the colourful interior, which was added to by many appropriately wearing something gold .
Chairman Jimmy Winterflood made a short speech of welcome to the company assembled to commemorate the event. The Club was very happy to have Mrs Eaton, Mayor of Dartford pre-sent and included in the guests were the immediate past Mayor and Deputy Mayor and their wives, together with representatives from local charities. A special guest was the Vicar of St
Michael's, who said grace before lunch.
Members were delighted to welcome Honorary Member Cyril Rose and his wife Margaret who travelled up from Somerset to be present. Over 80 sat down to the buffet lunch prepared as
usual for special occasions by Jean Johnson, Olga Carr and lady helpers and marked by its variety and high quality.
A selection of alcoholic and soft drinks were available both for the meal and the loyal toast proposed by the Mayor. A raffle resulted in a cheque for £145 to each of our two nominated
charities, Demelza House and Electronic Aids for the Blind (EAB) and were presented to Claire Emmett and Jimmy Winterflood respectively. Entertainment was provided by a Duo playing keyboard, singing and leading the company in popular songs. A large measure of the success of the event was due to the hard work in planning for the day by the Club's Secretary, Bryan Knight.
