The Royal Canoe Club cadets and juniors produced impressive results in the 2002 National Sprint Championships and were not distracted by a weakened senior squad who had training commitments abroad.
In the National Lightning Class, William Harris became national champion in the 200m and 1000m events in the u/11 group, and for the girls Rosie Farrington,10, gained a bronze medal in the 1000m and came fourth in the 200m.
Suki Rees, just eight years old, was fifth in the 200m and sixth in the 1000m in the same class.
In the girls u/14 class there was a bronze medal for Jessica Walker, Polly Farrington, Jessie Purdue, and Stephanie Clive in the 500m K4.
The same crew also came third in the 1000 K4 event, but due to only four crews competing a bronze medal was not awarded. Jessica Walker and Polly Farrington also paddled hard in the 500m K2 event to collect the bronze medal.
Adam Kennedy won the men's A Class and crewed as a member of the u/23 Olympic racing squad K4. He become the senior national champion in the K4 over 1000m, and 500m. This crew includes Ben Farrell of Elmbridge CC. Adam and Ben also crewed the K2 over 500m and gained the silver medal.
Other reults: Womens B Class, Rebecca Hunter; 200m K1 (1st), 500m K1 (2nd), 500m K2 (2nd), 1000m K2 (2nd), 1000m K1 (4th).
