A time capsule buried in 1977 to mark the Queen's silver jubilee was re-opened on Friday, after 25 years in the Civic Centre vaults. Many of the borough's schools and colleges contributed items, showing how they celebrated the occasion or giving an insight into life in the late 1970s.
They included a commemorative coin from Buckingham, Rayners and Tyneholme nurseries; a school photograph from Nower Hill High School in North Harrow; examples of computer programming from Harrow College of Further Education; a chart showing the size of pupils' feet from class 4M of Pinner Wood First School and a film of Mountview High, a school which no longer exists.
Children's interests were also revealed. According to contributions from Norbury Middle School in Harrow, the favourite TV shows of the day were The Man from Atlantis, Starsky and Hutch, and the Generation Game. Favourite games included football, "war" and "feet off ground".
The contents are on display at Harrow Museum and Heritage Centre at Headstone Manor, off Headstone Lane, North Harrow, until the end of the summer. In the autumn, the capsule will be re-sealed with contributions commemorating life in 2002.
