Police investigating the manslaughter of Purley Station attendant Phil Cable following an arson attack on a train, have released a CCTV still of a suspect.
Police are appealing for help identifying a youth photographed at Whyteleafe Station near the time of the fire on the 23.15 Caterham to Norwood Junction train on Friday, July 5.
The 60-year-old, an asthma sufferer, was overcome by fumes after tackling the fire.
The spokesman said: "After someone set fire to seat cushions on the train arriving at Purley shortly after 11.30pm, Mr Cable, who suffered from asthma, went to help but collapsed after leaving the train." The spokesman added: "His tragic death is being treated as manslaughter.
"Anyone with information about the incident, or who thinks they can identify the suspect is asked to contact BTP on 020 7391 5275 (24 hours)." Or contact Crimestoppers anonymoously on 0800 555 111 (freephone). South Central trains are also offering a £5,000 reward for
information leading to a conviction.
