In a call for more CCTV, the council was accused of not doing enough to reduce crime and reassure residents.
Councillor David Osland made the allegation at a full council meeting on Monday, July 15, after learning no central government grants for CCTV were planned.
He said cabinet member for Public Protection and Public Health Councillor Maggie Mansell showed "a total lack of understanding that CCTV is a reassurance and an important element in fighting bad behaviour in our streets."
Stressing that CCTV was just one of many ways the council was looking to fight crime and keep streets safe, Coun Mansell replied: "Mobile CCTV is available if the police believe that it's going to add to the work they are doing."
