The Mayor of Kingston Councillor Don Jordan has announced the Kingston Can cancer unit appeal will be his Mayoral charity for the year.
A reception was held at the Guildhall, Kingston, on Friday July 5.
Coun Jordan said: "Cancer touches one in three people and it is generally curable or controllable if diagnosed early enough.
"I would like Kingston to have one of the best cancer units in the country, which is quite possible with the help of residents and the business community."
Kingston Hospital treats more than 1,500 cancers each year and its survival rates for the three most common forms are among the best in the country.
The new unit will deliver a caring, sympathetic and confidential environment where patients will receive specialist care and treatment under one roof.
At the reception the Mayor also gave his support to the Kingston Theatre Trust, which is raising money to fit out the first new theatre of the 21st century.
He said: "Kingston should long since have had an arena for the arts. The Mayoral team will support the promotion of the new facility in any way that we can."
