CHIGWELL'S West Hatch High School has become one of the first business and enterprise specialist schools in the country with pupils, parents and local businesses set to reap the rewards.o
The High Road school, which hails the move as "the dawn of a new educational era", is among just three schools in the eastern region and one of 18 nationally to be awarded the new status after it had to raise £50,000 in private sponsorship.
It will now attract additional Government funding totalling £642,000 over a four-year period.
The school is close to completing the building of a business and enterprise centre which will enable it to become a community-based location providing training and support for small businesses, pupils, parents and the local community.
Exciting projects are planned across the curriculum with local primary, secondary and special schools, and community groups.
Work experience abroad, on-line learning and video conferencing are among the initiatives to be introduced.
Head teacher Frances Howarth said: "We are very proud of what the school has achieved. This designation is very significant for West Hatch and marks a new phase in the school's development.
"The funding will enable us to significantly enhance resources, facilities and development opportunities."
She said the school was aiming to produce young citizens who have entrepreneurial qualities who rise to new challenges, make the most of themselves and are confident and dynamic.
"Employers need and want such people," she said.
"We are looking forward to strengthening our links with community groups and the private sector to enrich the provision and opportunities we can offer."
Chairman of governors Ann Miller said: "We are extremely grateful for the generosity and support of all of those from the local community who helped us succeed in our bid for business and enterprise status.
"Now it is good to know that our success in achieving this means that West Hatch students together with the local community will benefit.
"It's the dawn of a new educational era for us all, a great opportunity for West Hatch."
Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing, who supported the bid, said: "It gives the school well deserved recognition for all the initiatives it has taken. I believe it will bring enormous benefits to the local community.
"A school should not be an isolated place. It is very much part of our community and this development has the potential for a widespread beneficial effect both in Chigwell and the surrounding area."
