Fulham confirmed yesterday they had bid for a site at Wood Lane, west London, with a view to building a stadium on it should the redevelopment of Craven Cottage hit problems.

The bid was unsuccessful and, in a statement on its official website, the club said: "You will be aware of the various difficulties the club has been having with the redevelopment programme for Craven Cottage.

"In view of the setbacks the club has faced, it would have been foolhardy not to keep options open to ensure we are able to construct a stadium we can be proud of a stadium that will fulfil Fulham Football Club's aspirations for the future.

"We did enter into discussions with a view to obtaining the site at Wood Lane West London, as a fallback position, should we be prevented from developing Craven cottage in the long term."
