Dulwich College has been described as a "very successful school on a fine site" in the recent report by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
Aspects singled out for praise include high quality teaching staff and a strong management team, as well as well-stocked libraries, high standard of music, careers guidance and a good range of co-curricular activities.
However, inspectors suggested communication technology should be used more.
Graham Able, headmaster of Dulwich College, said: "I was very pleased with the results of the inspection. The dedication and quality of my staff is obviously not news to me but it is reassuring to have my confidence in them endorsed by impartial professionals.
"I was delighted the inspectors recognised and applauded the happy and enthusiastic atmosphere that exists here.
"However, no school can afford to rest on its laurels, which is why we are already tackling the issues. We have introduced a BTEC course in IT skills and are focusing on ways of offering greater challenges to our more able pupils in the middle school years, while developing still further our existing special needs provision."
